Water Ledger team and partnership

Brisbane bred, globally led

Transformation often begins with a simple question.

Ours was: why can't we agree on simple things - how much water we have, how much we use, how much we share?

From humble beginnings in Brisbane, we're proving that trust, transparency, and accountability aren't just ideals—they're the foundation of effective water governance and markets.

Origin story

Brisbane, 2016 - an Australian government innovation challenge asked: how do you bring transparency to water markets?

Our idea was simple - make water trading completely transparent using blockchain technology.

We made the final five, built our proof of concept, and discovered something fundamental: trading happens just fine - if you're big enough to play the game. Everyone else is just along for the ride.

That realisation changed everything. We shifted focus from just trading transparency to solving the foundational problem - water accounting that doesn't rely on spreadsheets, including ours.

Today, we're a global company headquartered in Ireland, with operations across Europe, Australia, South Africa, and the USA. Our platforms are helping customers account for water, trade mitigation credits, and invest with confidence - because real market transparency starts with knowing what you actually have.

Virginia

Virginia

Richmond, 2025 - a Commonwealth of Virginia public procurement asked: how do you bring transparency and improve efficiency of mitigation credit markets?

Our answer was straightforward - extend our proven blockchain platform to issue and manage wetland, stream, and nutrient credits.

We won the competitive procurement, and our Stream, Wetland and Nutrient Credit Exchange (SWaN) went live on December 15, 2025.

The challenge was familiar: fragmented recordkeeping, opaque transactions, and a market where trust depended on paperwork and intermediaries. Developers needed credits. Banks needed assurance. Regulators needed oversight. But the infrastructure to connect them reliably didn't exist.

SWaN changed that. Built on our immutable ledger technology, it creates a single source of truth for Virginia's mitigation credit market - from credit generation at approved banks, through every transaction, to final retirement. No reconciliation disputes. No uncertainty about credit validity. No wondering if a credit has been double-sold.

What started as a Virginia solution proved something bigger: when you solve the accounting problem first, the market takes care of itself. SWaN isn't just digitising an old process - it's demonstrating how environmental markets should work everywhere
